ASTM International architectural model program standard E3223
In December 2020, ASTM International announced the development of a standard to help architects who are designing model (or mockup) structures used to prepare for the construction of a new building. ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings developed this standard, referred to as E3223.
When new buildings are constructed, especially large complex buildings with intricate facades, the design team will typically build a model that simulates a portion of the façade and its components.
This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 on climate action, particularly 13.2, which seeks to integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning. The standard can help in the creation of energy efficient and high-performing envelopes that can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases.
The E06 Committee has 18 technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over more than 245 standards published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. These standards address issues relating to the performance of buildings, their elements, components and the description, measurement, prediction, improvement and management.
ASTM International is in the process of soliciting feedback from practising architects who will help determine how user-friendly the standard is and how its use in the profession could be improved. Interested parties are invited to participate in the development of future revisions to the new standard, since there is a wide variety of experiences with mockup construction.
